Connecticut Whale Sale at the XL Center

CT Whale Sale
CT Whale Sale

Last Saturday Madison Square Garden held an equipment sale at the XL Center. The team is switching brands. They are going back to the Wolf Pack name that the team began with when they moved from Binghamton back in 1997

There was plenty of Whale and Wolf Pack gear. It wasn't cheap either. I was told by the staff at the equipment sale that MSG set the prices. As pricey as it was it sure didn't keep fans and hockey players away to use some professional equipment.

Harry Neale Earns Hall of Fame Nod

The Hockey Hall of Fame announced the 2013 recipients of the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award and the Elmer Ferguson Memorial Award on Monday, awarding the honors to Buffalo Sabres broadcaster Harry Neale, and to journalist Jay Greenberg, respectively.

Neale, the popular veteran broadcaster and former Minnesota Fighting Saints, New England Whalers , Detroit Red Wings and Vancouver Canucks coach, was chosen by the National Hockey League Broadcasters' Association as this year's winner of the Hewitt award in recognition of his contributions to hockey broadcasting. He also wins the award the year after his long-time Sabres broadcast partner, Rick Jeanneret, was honored.

"Harry has entertained millions of hockey fans in the United States and Canada for close to 30 years," Chuck Kaiton, President of the NHL Broadcasters' Association, said. "His unique brand of humor and insight has been memorable. He is extremely worthy of this honor and the NHL Broadcasters' Association applauds him for his great work in all aspects of hockey."

On This Date: The Whalers Draft Ron Francis

Ron Francis
Ron Francis

On this date in 1981, the Whalers (reluctantly) drafted Ron Francis 4th overall after being outflanked by the Caps for "The Can't Miss Kid" Bobby Carpenter. Francis, of course, became the best player to come out of the draft. Later the Whalers added Paul MacDermid. Combined with their 1982 draft haul (Samuelsson, Dineen, Ferraro) the Whalers had a good core heading into the mid 1980s.

A look Back at the Epic 1982 Whalers Draft

Ray Ferraro
Ray Ferraro

This date in Whalers History, June 9, 1982.:  The Whalers Select Paul Lawless (1), Kevin Dineen (3), Ulf Samuelsson (4) and Ray Ferraro (5) in the 1982 NHL Draft.  They also added another future NHLer -- Randy Gilhen -- in round six.

Although Larry Pleau struggled mightily as the Whalers GM, he began to hit his stride with his gem of a draft.  It was too little, too late to salvage his job as he was replaced by Emile Francis a year later.

Combined Ferraro, Dineen and Samuelsson would play over 3,000 NHL games

Sidorkiewicz joining Oshawa Hall of Fame

peter sidorkiewicz
Peter Sidorkiewicz Gets Oshawa Hall Nod.

By Katie Richard/The Oshawa Express

Since Peter Sidorkiewicz was a small boy hockey has been a big part of his life.

“I was seven years old when I first started playing,” he says. “I played house league for three years and at age 10 I played with the All Stars AAA. I played in Oshawa the whole time.”

As the youngest of six children, Sidorkiewicz says it was actually his softball coach who noticed his athleticism and suggested he try hockey was he was just four years old.

“I remember my first (hockey) practice. My parents had bought me all the gear and the coach came into the locker room and said ‘We don’t have a goalie’. I don’t know why I did but I raised my hand,” he says chuckling.

After that game, Sidorkiewicz says he tried taking on the role of a forward, but he didn’t “come within 100 feet of the puck.”

So back to goaltending it was, he says, where the puck comes to you.

Throughout the years Sidorkiewicz moved his way up through the hockey ranks.

Kelly Chase on "The Code"

Kelly Chase
Kelly Chase, Hartford Whalers

"I never went into Detroit worrying about hitting Steve Yzerman from behind. I never worried - gee, I wonder what (commissioner) Gary Bettman’s going to do? - because I already knew what the penalty was.

The penalty was (Joe) Kocur and (Bob) Probert. The penalty wasn’t: Geez, Gary Bettman’s going to be really angry with me."
